Administrative records, 1896-1999, consisting of the files of the superintendents and stewards documenting the management of Northern Wisconsin Center for the Developmentally Disabled (NWCDD). Records include histories of the institution, organization charts, information on maintenance and management of the physical facilities, grant administration records, newsletters and correspondence of parent organizations, population movement records, superintendent's speeches, reports, staff records and other subject files. Visual materials document the NWCDD facility and staff, patients, and programs.

This agency opened in 1897 in Chippewa Falls, Wis., as the Wisconsin Home for the Feeble-Minded. Around 1923 the name was changed to the Northern Wisconsin Colony and Training School. The name was changed to its present form in 1977. The center reported to the State Board of Control (WIHV85-A2106), 1891-1939; the Division of Mental Hygiene (WIHV88-A586) in the State Department of Public Welfare (WIHV85-A488), 1939-1967; and various divisions within the Department of Health and Social Services (W...
